2.42 billion people use generative AI — 29.2% of humanity, more than double a year earlier. The number makes the rounds in keynotes, startup pitches, and LinkedIn posts as if it were a census. Its source, DataReportal's Digital 2026 report, expressly asks that nobody read it that way: there is a risk of overlap and duplication, and the report itself advises against interpreting the figure as 2.42 billion people.
I checked every step of that pyramid against the primary source — and added the step no international version has: Brazil. What the check revealed fits in one sentence: the giant AI numbers count accounts, not people, and the distance between "has opened ChatGPT once" and "works with AI agents" is two orders of magnitude.
All of humanity in 2,500 dots
We are about 8.3 billion (UN projection for July 2026). Of those, 2.2 billion — 27% — remain offline, according to the ITU: they never entered the conversation. Among the 6 billion who are connected, the ceiling for active generative AI use is DataReportal's 2.42 billion. That leaves about 5.9 billion people — 71% of humanity — who have never used generative AI.
At this chart's resolution, the world's paid AI subscribers — all of them — are 24 dots out of 2,500. The people who work with coding agents — the entire bubble that dominates your feed — are 4 dots.
The groups are exclusive on purpose: each person appears only in the most advanced category they fit. That is a piece of methodological honesty that changes the reading — without it, the same person would be counted as user, subscriber, and early adopter all at once, and the pyramid would turn into propaganda.
A note on method. In this pyramid, three numbers are published counts (8.3 billion, 2.2 billion offline, 2.42 billion users) and two are my own estimates declared as ranges (paying users, coding agents — the reasoning behind each range is in the sections below). The 2.42 billion is a ceiling, not a census: DataReportal composes the number from OpenAI, Similarweb, and CNNIC and warns that it may not represent unique individuals. The 5.9 billion who "never used it" is derived by subtraction — it inherits the same uncertainty.
Why you cannot add up the chatbots
The instinct is to add: ChatGPT's 900 million, plus Gemini's users, plus Claude, plus Meta AI — and land on a bigger, more impressive number. The instinct is wrong for three reasons, and each one showed up during the check:
- The same person is three accounts. Someone who uses ChatGPT at work, Gemini on their phone, and Claude for code is one human and three "active users". No vendor deduplicates against its competitors.
- Each vendor measures however it wants. OpenAI reports weekly active users (WAU); Microsoft reports paid seats and daily users; household surveys ask "have you used it in the last 3 months?". They are different rulers that the headline treats as one.
- The same vendor publishes numbers that do not square with each other. OpenAI currently maintains two official pages: one says Codex "more than tripled since the start of the year, to 1.6 million" weekly users; the other says "more than 5 million". Neither page has a visible date. The chronological order is the reader's inference.
The largest individual number is solid in what it claims: ChatGPT passed 900 million weekly active users — OpenAI's page does not date the milestone, but coverage pins it to February 2026. The context is worth putting on the record: the announcement went out the same day the company raised US$ 110 billion. A usage metric is also a fundraising instrument.
And worse versions circulate: a viral claim from December 2025 said that "84% of the world has never used AI" (6.8 billion people). The verifiable number is 71% — the viral stretched it by 13 percentage points, because nobody checks the denominator. The direction was right; the figure was not.
Method changes the headline: Germany has two truths
How many Germans use AI? 58%, according to the industry association Bitkom. 32.2%, according to Eurostat. Both numbers are from 2025-2026, both are "right" — and the difference is the ruler. Bitkom asks about any use (in its own survey, only 34% use AI at least once a week); Eurostat requires use within the last 3 months, in the population aged 16 to 74.
It is the cleanest example of why an adoption ranking without a methods note is fiction. With Eurostat's uniform ruler, the European picture looks like this:

In the United States, the ruler is different yet again: Pew Research measured in February 2026 that 49% of adults use AI chatbots — in 2024, 33% said they had ever used one. Even the verb in the question changed between the two waves; actual adoption grew enough to survive the change of ruler with room to spare.
The cut that makes the fewest headlines is the one that best explains your feed: in the European Union, 63.8% of people aged 16 to 24 used AI in the last 3 months — against 6.5% of those aged 65 to 74. Ten times more. "Everyone uses AI" and "almost nobody uses AI" are the same statistic read from different generations.
The missing step: Brazil
The German-language piece that inspired this story does not contain a single line about Brazil — and the gap is not its fault: none of the international rankings in circulation do. There is, however, a Brazilian probabilistic household survey, run face-to-face with 24,000 respondents — on par with the best in the world — and it measured generative AI for the first time in 2025.

Two readings jump out of the table. The first: Brazil is not behind the world — 23% of the total population against a global ceiling of 29.2% that, as we have seen, counts accounts. With 90.5% of the 10+ population connected, infrastructure is not the bottleneck.
The second is the data point no national average shows: AI adoption in Brazil is a portrait of inequality — 69% in class A, 16% in classes D and E; 59% among people with a university degree, 17% among those who stopped at primary school. The national average of 32% is an abstraction stretched between two different countries. And the generation coming up: 65% of Brazilians aged 9 to 17 have already used generative AI — the European age ruler, reproduced here.
r/brdev, the largest Brazilian developer community on Reddit, tells the same story in the first person (quotes translated from the Portuguese). In a February 2026 thread about companies forcing AI use, one comment sums up the bubble from the inside: "Hold on, you guys still DON'T use AI? I really do live in a bubble." In another, from December 2025, a dev at a consultancy describes the new daily routine as the job of "fixing a Frankenstein generated by a machine". The gap between the feed and the shop floor is not an American phenomenon.
Who pays: the 1% slice
Here the pyramid truly narrows. The public, auditable paid-subscription numbers are few — and they add up to less than it seems:

The sum is ~79 million known subscriptions — with overlap (the same person pays for ChatGPT and Copilot) and with gaps (Google, Anthropic, Perplexity, and Midjourney publish no auditable subscriber numbers). My honest estimate, declared as a range: 70 to 100 million people pay for AI worldwide — about 1% of humanity.
To calibrate what that means: Netflix closed 2025 with more than 325 million paid subscriptions. The entire world market for AI subscriptions, added together, is between one fifth and one third of a single Netflix.
The community nailed this proportion before the reports did. In the top-voted r/ChatGPT thread on OpenAI's finances (November 2025), the comment is blunt: "Only 5% of its 800 million users have a subscription". Today's math checks out: 50 million consumer subscribers over 900 million weekly users ≈ 5.5% conversion. On Hacker News, the same arithmetic shows up from the revenue side: "900M users with free or cheap subscription are nothing compared to even 10k heavy API users". And OpenAI's own study of ChatGPT usage (September 2025) completes the picture: 73% of conversations are not work-related. The most widely adopted product in the category's history is, for the vast majority, a free personal-use utility.
In Brazil, the only available proxy points the same way: 16% of generative AI users with a smartphone say they subscribe to some paid plan (Mobile Time/Opinion Box, March 2026) — an online panel, skewed toward the most connected, not a population anchor. There is no household survey measuring paying users; that is why the funnel above has no Brazil step.
Coding agents: the bubble is real — from inside the bubble
The narrowest step is the one that produces the most discourse. The public components: Codex with 5 million+ weekly users (with the internal divergence of 1.6 million noted above), GitHub Copilot with 4.7 million paying users. The rest of the market — Claude Code, Cursor, Windsurf — publishes no auditable numbers. My range, factoring in the heavy overlap of people who use two or three of them: 10 to 15 million people using coding agents — about 0.14% of humanity. One in every seven hundred humans.
Two community findings qualify even that small number:
- The growth is subsidized. A Cursor estimate, circulated via Forbes in March 2026, calculated that Claude Code's US$ 200/month plan could consume up to US$ 2,000 in compute — today, up to US$ 5,000. Part of current adoption only exists because it is being sold at 4-10% of cost.
- Perceived productivity and measured productivity diverge. On r/ExperiencedDevs, the echo of the METR study became a refrain: "developers being 20% less productive but think they are 20% more productive". On the other side of the ledger, inside the big tech companies use really is near-universal — the bubble is real, but geographically small.
The thread that best captures the view from outside the bubble is from r/webdev (March 2026, "You're Not Behind"): a dev who left an AI-immersed consultancy discovered that the other teams hire exactly as they did five years ago — and that, in his actual workday, AI is "like 10% of my day".
The 2.2 billion who never entered the conversation
The base of the pyramid does not use AI because it does not use the internet: 2.2 billion people offline in 2025, 27% of humanity, according to the ITU. Everything this article discusses — adoption, subscriptions, agents — happens inside the connected three quarters. Any projection of "AI for everyone" runs first into infrastructure, energy, and income, not into language models. In Brazil, the mirror of this is the class cut in the table above: the connection has arrived (95% of households), but advanced use still lives in the upper strata.
You are not behind — but the clock is running
The static reading of the pyramid is a consolation: if you use generative AI every week, you are among the ~29% most exposed of humanity; if you pay, you are in the 1%; if you work with agents, you are in the 0.14%. Behind is the last thing you are.
The dynamic reading dismantles half of that consolation. The user ceiling more than doubled in 12 months (+141%, +1.4 billion). In the US, use jumped from 33% to 49% of adults in two years. Young Europeans are already at 64% — and Brazilians aged 9 to 17, at 65%. No technology in history has had an adoption curve this steep sustained on a base this large.
Both readings are true at the same time: the advantage of those who use it is real, and its window is shrinking at the speed of one doubling per year.
What I would do with this
Distrust any AI number that comes without its ruler. "Users" can mean accounts, sessions, WAU, MAU, or seats; "uses AI" can mean "opened it once" or "uses it every week". The same Germany yields 58% or 32% depending on the question. Before quoting a number, ask: who measured, measured what, over which window.
If you make product or career decisions, size by the right step. The market for AI use: billions. The market for paying users: tens of millions — one fifth of a Netflix. The agents market: millions, and partially subsidized. They are three different markets that the hype adds into one.
If you feel behind, look at the denominator. The feeling comes from your feed, and the feed is the 0.14% bubble talking about itself. The real advantage of learning AI today is not catching up with the people ahead of you — it is the distance to the 71% who have not even started. That advantage is enormous, and it is the one that is shrinking.
