The most complete statistics page about Claude Code credits its download figures to an npm
package that, as far as the evidence reaches, never existed. The package it cites returns
404 on the registry and has zero captures on the Wayback Machine — not even the internet's
archive saw it go by. The real package, @anthropic-ai/claude-code, has a public downloads
API anyone can query with a single command: 429 million cumulative downloads, 15.1
million in the last week alone. The page published "111,000+". The plus sign has never
worked so hard.
I measured every number in this article straight from the source — npm's API, GitHub's API, the Wayback Machine, official announcements, Anthropic's open dataset. This is the sequel promised in the article on Claude's statistics: there I said Claude Code's product numbers were being left for an article of their own. This is it.
Methodological note. The object of this check is the "Claude Code Statistiken 2026" page from the German blog gradually.ai (Wayback snapshot of May 20, 2026, data labelled "Stand März 2026"), the most structured of the statistics pages in circulation — and, as in the previous article, it pays the price of being the best in its category: it is the one you can actually check. Downloads and stars were measured through the public npm and GitHub APIs on Aug 11, 2026; historical values through Wayback snapshots. Where only a third-party estimate exists, the text says "estimate" and names the third party.
The one number you could actually measure is the one they got most wrong
npm package downloads are the most verifiable datum in the JavaScript ecosystem: the API is public, no key, no paywall. It is precisely the number the page gets most wrong:

The trail back to the origin is visible: an American "AI statistics" aggregator publishes
the same "111,000+ monthly" and the same "22,000 stars" for March 2026. The German page
repeats both numbers — and makes one of them worse, promoting "monthly" to "cumulative". It
is the pattern that has already turned up here twice: aggregator cites aggregator, and the
number travels the world without anyone running the curl that would disprove it in ten
seconds.

Two caveats that apply to my measurement as much as to theirs — an article about badly read numbers cannot ask for a naive reading of its own:
- A download is not a user. CI pipelines reinstall the package on every build; mirrors count; the same person installs it on three machines. The 429 million measure traction and distribution, not people.
- The ruler is shrinking from below. The official README now declares npm installation deprecated — the recommended path is the native installer, Homebrew or winget, none of which npm can see. The post-April decline in the chart coincides with that migration (that is my hypothesis, and it is recorded as a hypothesis). Which means: from 2026 onwards, even the giant number understates real usage.
The 906-person survey that became "15,000 developers"
Half the page leans on a real and good source: the Pragmatic Engineer's AI tooling survey, from February 2026. The page presents it as "15,000 developers surveyed". The survey's own data say something else: 906 respondents, collected between January 27 and February 17, 2026 — "nearly a thousand", in the author's own words. The 15,000 is the size of the audience invited, not of the sample that answered.
The irony is that the survey did not need inflating. With the honest n, the results are already remarkable — and they check out, one by one, against the original publication:

A sample of 906 engineers who read a technical newsletter has a known bias — people more senior and more early-adopter than average. That is a limitation to declare, not to hide behind a number 16 times bigger.
The revenue trail: two numbers are signed, the rest is echo
The page estimates Claude Code's revenue at "around US$ 2.5 billion annualised, roughly 13% of Anthropic". The path to those numbers is where the difference between primary and echo lives — because, unlike what used to be the rule in this category, here there are two official anchors:
- US$ 1 billion in run rate in November 2025 — Anthropic's own announcement, dated December 3: "In November, Claude Code achieved a significant milestone: just six months after becoming available to the public, it reached $1 billion in run-rate revenue." Six months after general availability. The German page dates this milestone correctly — I record it, because a fact-check that only finds errors is as suspect as a page that only finds records.
- "More than US$ 2.5 billion" on February 12, 2026 — the Series G announcement, which carries on the same page the company total on the same date: US$ 14 billion of run rate. The honest division is ~18%, not 13%. The German page's 13% comes from dividing February's Claude Code (US$ 2.5bn) by March's company (US$ 19bn, Bloomberg's number) — numerator and denominator from different months, with run rate growing double digits a month.
The official announcement also yields the only signed usage numbers: Claude Code's weekly active users doubled since January 1, 2026, and business subscriptions quadrupled — relative growth; the absolute user count is something Anthropic does not publish, and every "X million WAU" in circulation is a third-party estimate (the most cited one openly declares itself a guess: "3 to 6 million" — when in doubt, double the range). After February, the official trail specific to Claude Code dries up: the "US$ 8 billion in May" circulating among aggregators has no primary source — Series H (May 28, 2026) published the company total, US$ 47 billion of run rate, without breaking out the product's slice. And run rate, as always: a good month times twelve, not revenue booked.
The indirect signal of demand, that one is public and official: between May and August 2026, the @ClaudeDevs account announced successive raises and extensions of +50% on weekly usage limits ("weekly limits are increasing 50%, now through July 13"; later, "now through August 19") — a company with capacity to spare does not spend a quarter managing a queue.
The most unbelievable claim turned out to be true
"4% of all public GitHub commits are written by Claude Code" had every look of a social-media legend — and the first time that number came my way, in the previous article, I could not find the source. I found it now, and it is double: the estimate is SemiAnalysis's (paid analysis, Feb 5, 2026), and Anthropic itself echoed it in the official Series G announcement, with attribution and all:
"A recent analysis estimated that 4% of all GitHub public commits worldwide were being authored by Claude Code—double the percentage from just one month prior."
The correct status, then: a third-party estimate, endorsed by the company in an official document — not telemetry, not direct measurement. Doubling from 2% to 4% in a month is the kind of curve that either becomes history or becomes a ceiling; as of August, no primary update from the same authors had been published.
The page's benchmarks, on the other hand, did not survive the same check: "95% correctness on the first try", "React dashboard in 47 minutes", "test suite in 23 minutes" and "58% on SWE-bench standalone" do not exist in any primary source I was able to locate — not Anthropic, not a paper, not a named third-party benchmark. The "95%" that does circulate is a different sentence: Benjamin Mann (Anthropic co-founder) saying that 95% of his own code is written by Claude Code — a personal account, traceable only via a repost, which the page turned into a universal quality metric.
"Open source" with a closed LICENSE.md
The page's spec table lists "License: Open Source", and its list of records celebrates
Claude Code as "one of the few commercially successful tools that are open source". The
repository's LICENSE.md file says, in full:

GitHub's API confirms it: license: None. The public repository exists, accepts issues and
distributes plugins — but the product's code is proprietary, "all rights reserved". Calling
that open source is not a translation slip; it is getting wrong the one line in the table
you can verify by reading a fourteen-word file — three of whose words are "all rights
reserved".
What the primary source says when somebody reads it — and where Brazil comes in
Anthropic publishes open research on Claude Code usage. The June 16, 2026 paper analysed ~400,000 sessions from ~235,000 users between October 2025 and April 2026 — the heaviest users spending 20 hours a week inside the tool. It is the kind of number, with methodology and a signature, that statistics pages ignore in favour of an authorless "95% correctness".
Geography for Claude Code specifically is something the primary source does not have: the Anthropic Economic Index publishes country-level microdata for Claude.ai, and the API slice excludes Claude Code from its breakdowns. So I declare exactly what the closest primary source allows me to measure — and I measured it, in the open (CC-BY) dataset for May 2026:
In Brazil, 26.0% of Claude.ai usage is work from computer and mathematical occupations — above the global average (23.8%) and the United States (21.1%). The country that the previous article showed to be 5th in volume and only 61st in intensity is, within the usage it does have, one of the most concentrated in programming. The honest reading of the two articles together: Brazil does not use much Claude per capita — but when it does, it programs.

Four check out, four are wrong, two have no source that would allow a verdict. The detail that organises the scorecard: the errors all point in the same direction — downwards. The page understated downloads by three orders of magnitude, stars by 3.5x, the revenue share by five points. The real product, measurable through a public API, is bigger than the product described by the page that existed to promote it.
What I would do with this
Before citing any AI-tool statistic, three checks that cost almost nothing: does the figure
have a named producer (company? survey? aggregator?) — and is the producer cited the
origin or the echo? Is the number measurable through a public API (npm, GitHub, an open
dataset)? If it is, measure it: it is ten seconds of curl, and in this article that step
disproved the figure three times. And does the denominator match the numerator — same date,
same ruler? It was that third question that brought down the "13%".
The rest — "X% correctness", "dashboard in N minutes" — treat as what it is: an orphan number. If nobody signs it, nobody measured it.
